András Baka is the new President of Hungary

The Hungarian Parliament elected the Tisza Party's presidential candidate, jurist András Baka, as the next President of Hungary. Following the election, the new head of state took an oath to uphold and enforce the Constitution.

András Baka was born in 1952 in Budapest. He graduated from the Faculty of Law and Political Science of ELTE University in Budapest in 1978 and conducted constitutional law research at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences until 1989.

He was the first Hungarian judge of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg between 1991 and 2008.

He was the presiding judge of the Metropolitan Court of Justice between 2008 and 2009, and the President of the Supreme Court between 2009 and 2011, until his premature removal, and later the presiding judge of the Curia.

In accordance with Article 11(6) of the Constitution the President of the Republic shall take office 8 days after his election, and accordingly, András Baka shall exercise his full duties and powers as President of Hungary from 19 August 2026.
